Alfie enjoying the flight from Berlin to England
Last night, following a short flight with a rather hyperactive baby on my lap, Alfie and I arrived home from our trip to England and the Mad Blog Awards. What a trip it was! Full of firsts, we managed to squeeze a ridiculous amount in to our short stay. I missed Milo dreadfully and I found myself get secretly tearful a couple of times in the early days. It just felt so wrong being in England without him, but after finally getting a chance to speak to him on the Saturday, I felt better and look forward to picking him up early from nursery today.
With the amount of travelling we fit in to our visit, I think it was for the best that I only took Alfie as it would have been exhausting for Milo. We slept in 3 different places, including Alfie's first stay in a hotel, and drove maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaany miles in my parent's car. From Sussex to London, to Bristol and then back to London, it was quite the adventure.
On Friday night, I got dressed up, tried to die down the nerves that were keeping my stomach in knots and headed out to Kensington for the Mad Blog Awards. It was both exciting and more than a little strange making my way through London in high-heeled boots and a fancy dress in the early evening. I got a few stares and because of the size of the dress, a number of people on the Underground were unsure as to whether they should attempt to sit next to me or not.
Feeling slightly awkward being photographed by my parents as though I was going to prom
I finally arrived though and was thankful for the glass of champagne that was quickly handed to me. The night went by quickly. Lots of wonderful bloggers won (you can see the full list of winners here). My category of 'Best Pregnancy Blog' was won by the very deserved winner 'Mummy, Daddy and Me Makes Three' who luckily had the photo of the 3 finalists from our category, me included of course, who were able to make it. It's the only photo I have of the night!
Celebrating with my fellow finalists: Bex from 'The Mummy Adventure'
& Katie from 'Mummy, Daddy & Me Makes Three'
It was a little scary going in to a room full of people I didn't know but I got to meet some lovely ladies including a mum who came from further than I did to attend the awards! Melbourne, Australia in fact! We both bonded over the fact that we have moved from our home countries and were a bit out of the 'blogging scene' in many ways as a number of the bloggers at the awards knew each other already. Take a look at Rhian's blog The Only Way is Melbourne, she was nominated in the 'Most Entertaining Blog' category. I also met the lovely Steph from Steph's Two Girls blog and it was great to finally meet Bex from The Mummy Adventure (link above) whom I've chatted with online since we were both pregnant with our second children at the same time.
Alfie practising his sitting on the hotel bed
A little hungover, I was up early the next morning to head off to Bristol for my nephew's 1st birthday party with the family. It was fantastic that the awards 'do' and the party were so close together as ordinarily I probably wouldn't have been able to make it. We celebrated in style with lots of family and friends and even more food. We then slept in a hotel nearby for the night and I got to enjoy a warm bath and a film rental whilst Alfie snoozed next to my bed. It felt kind of luxurious and made me think that I could do evening's like that alone with the boys on holiday in the future. As long as there is a good film to rent that is!
We had a fabulous time on our bonus trip to the UK for the year and I am so glad I went. Alfie loved the attention from his grandparents and great aunt, I got to see my nephew who I don't see all that often sadly and it was great to have a bit of a break and a couple of nights out on the town. Lucky me!
Thank you to everyone who made it possible by voting for me in the awards. I can't express how proud I was to be a finalist.
